The picturesque church of Saint George is located in the Alyki area, where Georgios Grivas Digenis disembarked on November 10, 1954. The church was built by the village’s great benefactor, Princess Zina Kanther de Tyra, at her own expense in honor of the leader of E.O.K.A.

The foundation stone was laid on July 16, 1961, during the archbishopric of the Metropolitan of Paphos, Mr. Gennadios. The contractor for the project was Charalambos A. Philipou. Later, the church was frescoed by Georgios and Alexandros Konstantinidis, with the care of the Holy Metropolis of Paphos and donations from Christians. It is noteworthy that in this small church, most weddings of foreigners who reside permanently in Cyprus take place.

The Road Paving:

Zina Kanther also undertook the paving of the road from the village to the church. This project cost 5,000 pounds at the time. When the work on the road began, a modest ceremony was held, attended by all the prominent figures of Paphos to honor the great benefactor. The main speaker of the ceremony was the village teacher, Mr. Stavros Michael. Mrs. Kanther was received with applause during the ceremony, and a banner depicting her face was hung. The banner was painted by Christodoulos Paphios, and it read: “Welcome, great benefactor of our community.”

The location of the church of Saint George emphasizes the deep-rooted faith that existed among the fighters of 1955.
